Role description
UST® is seeking a Lead SQL Server Database Administrator (Lead DBA) with expertise in database tuning, release cycle management, and ensuring the availability, stability, and performance of database environments across Development, QA, Test, Production, and Disaster Recovery.
The ideal candidate will work closely with development teams to support application development, production releases, and enforce SQL coding standards. As part of the Data Management team, you will assist in implementing data processes, troubleshooting performance issues, and enhancing database maintenance through automation.
This position requires strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with both technical teams and senior leadership. As a Lead DBA, you will deliver cutting-edge solutions for internal and external clients while managing critical database environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Database Administration:
- Install, configure, and upgrade SQL Server environments (2012-2022).
- Design and maintain backup, restore, and disaster recovery policies and procedures.
- Ensure the performance, availability, and integrity of database systems across environments.
- Implement and manage high-availability solutions (Always On, Failover Clusters).
- Monitor and optimize Azure SQL environments, including performance, storage, and memory.
- Support database migrations and data retention policies.
Development & Collaboration:
- Collaborate with application development teams on database design and access strategies.
- Provide technical assistance and SQL code reviews to development teams.
- Work with Quality Assurance to resolve issues and manage change control.
- Assist cross-functional teams with troubleshooting application and integration issues.
Automation & Optimization:
- Develop and automate routine database administration tasks using PowerShell and T-SQL.
- Monitor database environments using tools like Idera and ensure proactive issue resolution.
- Optimize existing processes and enforce SQL standards across the organization.
Security & Compliance:
- Manage database permissions and access for Database, SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS environments.
- Ensure compliance with data security standards, including encryption and user access management.
- Document and maintain up-to-date records of database configurations and processes.
Skills and Experience Required:
Mandatory Skills:
- 12+ years of hands-on experience in SQL Server database administration.
- Expertise in SQL Server 2012-2022 with advanced knowledge of:
- Always On and Failover Clusters
- Replication technologies (including Qlik)
- Idera or other monitoring tools
- Strong troubleshooting capabilities and the ability to provide technical recommendations.
- Experience with Azure SQL environments, including monitoring VMs and workspaces.
- Automation experience using PowerShell and T-SQL scripting.
Good-to-Have Skills:
- Knowledge of Oracle database administration.
- Experience managing multi-tenant cloud-based environments.
- Familiarity with Powershell scripting for database automation.
- Ability to effectively communicate across all organizational levels.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent professional experience.
Other Expectations:
- Availability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation as needed.
- Ability to manage multiple environments and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to drive service improvements and optimize database operations.
