Job Description
IIHS is looking for a Software Developer to help automate various operational and functional needs across multiple functions in the organisation using technical knowledge, skills, and tools.
The Software Developer should help improve the key service delivery processes throughout the Institution and ensure that the correct metrics and Key Performance Indicators are in place. Applicants are expected to be well-versed with Python and similar programming languages, frontend technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, RDBMS databases, REST APIs, libraries like scrapy, BeautifulSoup, selenium, tabula, etc., cloud platforms, agile software development process and tools, current technological trends, platforms and clued into potential future developments.
The role of the Software Developer is to analyse, design, code, test, release and maintain various software applications, scripts, utilities, APIs, database schemas, dashboards, and some analytics work.
Activities and Tasks
As the Software Developer – Information Technology, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining various software applications, utilities and tools developed by you or otherwise at IIHS and working with the various functional stakeholders to understand their software requirements and getting them developed inhouse. You will be working closely with the technical team within the institution for technical consultation and guidance.
Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Automated collection and organisation of a large volume of metadata related to academic publications relevant to the Library and other teams;
- Automating various repetitive tasks across teams – for example, sending customised emails in bulk;
- Extraction of structured information from internal and external web portals using their APIs or through other methods of web scraping including extraction and analysis of the public interaction on the IIHS official social media channels;
- Development and maintenance of internal web applications for multiple teams – for example, CV management portal, admissions and application grading portal;
- Collaborating with the larger team for the maintenance and enhancement of the IIHS campus management system (CampusOS); defect fixing, specific enhancements, database tasks, dashboards, etc. related to the CampusOS software;
- Ensuring security, reliability, maintainability of the software developed and implemented;
- Ensuring the open defects are addressed in a timely manner;
- Using and creating knowledgebase articles based on new product information, supporting incidents, and/ or common or critical issues;
- Implementing process optimisation, improvements, and modernisation initiatives where appropriate;
- Identifying process inefficiencies and compliance issues, and implementing strategic technical solutions;
- Participating actively and collaboratively within the IT team, providing feedback on current day to day activities, and recommending improvements;
- Providing support to other IIHS activities including academics, research, training, practice, operations, and others;
- Participating in all activities of Institution-Building at IIHS; carrying out tasks as assigned by IIHS; and travelling on IIHS work within or outside the country as and when needed.
Structure and Reporting
The Software Developer – Information Technology will be an Associate/ Senior Associate within the IT team, reporting to the Senior Manager – Information Technology, and will be working closely with key stakeholders of all the functional teams.
Person Specification
This is a technical role, and the person needs to have hands-on software development experience and exposure to automation and software tools, agile process, and technologies. Requirements include:
- A Bachelor’s and/or a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or Computer Applications, or Information Systems, with at least six years of work experience, including two plus years in dealing with functional stakeholders (in case your experience level is lower, but your profile and interests are a good fit for this role, then you are still encouraged to apply);
- Familiarity with coding in Python or similar programming languages;
- Expertise in Scraping and Parsing of web content existing in diverse unstructured formats; experience with libraries like scrapy, BeautifulSoup, selenium, tabula, etc., along with a good understanding of web frontend technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript;
- Ability to create simple web services; good understanding of RDBMS and other types of databases and SQL; familiarity with REST APIs;
- The candidate should be a Full stack developer;
- Familiarity with the Languages /Frameworks such as Golang, JS, React;
- Knowledge on Kafka, databases (postgres), event analytics would be an added advantage;
- Working knowledge on the infrastructure including docker and ansible;
- Basic knowledge of Windows and Linux system administration to deploy scripts and applications on internal as well as cloud (Azure, AWS, etc.) servers;
- Knowledge and exposure to the functional domain areas of cloud infrastructure;
- Basic familiarity with Natural Language Processing, especially tasks like named entity recognition, topic modelling;
- Experience in or willingness to learn tabular data cleaning and visualisation;
- Interest in systematic organisation of large volumes of interconnected information using principles of ontology and tools like Protégé;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the Institution, including senior management;
- Ability to handle changing priorities, deal with ambiguity and use good judgment in stressful situations; ability to take on-time decisions even in the face of complexity, balancing systematic analysis with decisiveness.

Location
This position is based in Bengaluru and may entail travel to other locations in India.
