Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience.
• 20 years of experience in software engineering, building scalable software products.
• 15 years of experience leading and building teams and culture.
• Experience with Data Infrastructure, Distributed Systems, Performance at Scale, Data Trust and Safety, or related field.
  
  

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience building data processing pipelines.

About The Job

As the Senior Director of Engineering, Information Retrieval, you will lead the engineering efforts for the Information Retrieval India set of teams, with primary responsibility toward our Data Indexing Infrastructure. The Data Indexing (DI) team provides a canonical indexing platform and application solutions for Google, with planetary scale footprints, high reliability, efficiency, and extensibility. The DI team supports multiple applications that play critical roles in multiple Google businesses, including Web Search, Image Search, YouTube Video Search, Shopping Search, and Google Play Search. Additionally, the Data Indexing team curates high-quality, annotated, and canonical datasets that summarize a huge portion of the open web, including text, image, video, and audio. These datasets support multiple downstream applications, including search retrieval, model training, and grounding.

In this role, you will act as the Site Lead for Core Data’s expanding presence and teams in India. You will drive strategy around hiring, attracting, and growing talent in India, building culture, and advocating for the team across the India site and the greater Core Data Leadership team. You'll also provide leadership support to foster a core community by sponsoring one core initiatives for Bengaluru core, and driving partnership and bridges to India local core and product area partners. You will keep an eye on tech market shifts both in the greater Bengaluru tech environment, and Google India dynamics.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering teams that deliver critical Data Infrastructure foundation for many of Google’s products (e.g., Search, Shopping, YouTube, etc.) as well as emerging use cases such as data labelling for AI training.
• Build connections between and among IR and Data teams within the India Site and across Google.
• Drive engineering practice and community across all Core Data teams, including advocating for and driving site local projects within IR and across pillars.
• Drive hiring strategies, and work across Google to develop robust talent development and recruiting programs.
