This Position is with the Data Platform Engineering team (People Data Platforms) under the Enterprise Business Services – People Technology organisation focusing on Enterprise area of People Systems which is amid a massive digital transformation. The objective of the People tech organization is to build the best-in-class engineering, analytics and data science solutions that power the best experience for our people, adhering to the Walmart philosophy - Everyday Low Cost.
People Data team is responsible to build and maintain People Data Lake platform and other analytical products that aim to democratize access to HR data, enabling tech teams and business users across Walmart with relevant, timely data by streamlining acquisition, curation and consumption of data from various HR systems. The Team supports multiple use-cases that focus on providing engaging employee experiences resulting in global company success. The team is spread over multiple locations, and we work towards providing the best experience to Walmart associates and Business Stakeholders.

Your Opportunity
We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our Data Platform Engineering team. This role is ideal for engineers passionate about building robust, scalable, and secure data platforms. You will be responsible for designing and implementing data security, access control, and encryption solutions at scale, ensuring compliance and efficiency across our data ecosystem. You will also apply your Big Data expertise to optimise and manage distributed data systems efficiently.

Your Opportunity
We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our Data Platform Engineering team. This role is ideal for engineers passionate about building robust, scalable, and secure data platforms. You will be responsible for designing and implementing data security, access control, and encryption solutions at scale, ensuring compliance and efficiency across our data ecosystem. You will also apply your Big Data expertise to optimise and manage distributed data systems efficiently.
What You Will Do
- Design, develop, and maintain data security, access control, and encryption solutions within the data platform.
- Architect and implement role-based access control (RBAC) and attribute-based access control (ABAC) mechanisms.
- Build and optimize data encryption frameworks (both at rest and in transit) to ensure high security and compliance.
- Work with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services like Big Query, GCS, IAM, KMS, and Dataproc to develop secure data solutions.
- Design and develop APIs and lightweight microservices to manage access control policies, data masking, and security enforcement.
- Implement best practices for big data security in distributed environments (Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, etc.).
- Collaborate with Data Engineering, Security, and Compliance teams to ensure security policies are effectively implemented.
- Optimize performance and scalability of security and access control mechanisms in high-volume, distributed data systems.
- Develop monitoring and alerting mechanisms for detecting and mitigating data security threats.
- Work with large-scale data processing tools and techniques to handle data in real-time or batch environments.
- Design and implement scalable ETL pipelines to ingest, process, and store data efficiently.
- Participate in the development and improvement of data lakes and data warehouses to support business intelligence (BI) and analytics.
- Optimise data storage solutions for performance and cost-effectiveness, leveraging technologies like Big Query, Hadoop, and Cloud Storage.
- 7-10 years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on data security, access control, encryption, and Big Data platforms.
- Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and its security-related services (IAM, KMS, Cloud Audit Logs, etc.).
- Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or Scala.
- Experience building distributed systems and big data platforms using technologies like Apache Spark, Kafka, Hadoop, Flink, or Apache Beam.
- Exposure to data engineering techniques, including ETL pipeline development, data ingestion, and data wrangling.
- Solid understanding of security frameworks like OAuth, OpenID Connect, and JWT-based authentication.
- Experience designing secure APIs and microservices.
- Knowledge of data governance, compliance (GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, etc.), and regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity with encryption standards and cryptographic protocols.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in fast-paced environments.
- Experience with data orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow or Google Cloud Composer.
- Strong understanding of data modelling and database design for relational and NoSQL databases.
- Experience with streaming data systems like Kafka and Google Pub/Sub.
- Knowledge of containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and how to deploy and scale data engineering workloads in cloud environments.
